All first-year students are assigned individual lockers for their use during the four years of the dental program. Locks along with the combination are provided. NOTE: Students must use the locks assigned by VCU.

What do I do if my ID card will not allow me access to the building?

First check with the VCU Card office, (804) 628-CARD, VMI Bldg, Room 311, to ensure that the magnetic strip on the back is activated. If this is fine, then check with Mr. Mark Sutphin, VCU Dental Building 1, Room 119, to ensure that your card information has been entered into the access system.

What are the computer requirements for incoming students?

Please refer to the School of Dentistry computer requirements for specifications and to purchase a pre-configured computer through the Dell Computer Purchase Program.

Are scrubs required for all students?

Scrubs are to be worn at all times when in the dental school. The VCU School of Dentistry has adopted the policy of scrubs for all classes and clinics. They are purchased through Jet Desgin Graphics.  The scrubs will be fitted and ordered during dental school orientation.

Why do we have to pay an IMS deposit and IMS rental fees, what is the deposit for?

The instrument management sterilization (IMS) deposit acts as insurance for the school, if an instrument is damaged, and we are unable to recoup the cost of the repair from the student. In some cases, a student may transfer, and there are items missing from their lab bench that need to be replaced. The balance of the deposit is refundable after graduation or transfer, less any charges placed against it for damaged instruments. There is no interest accrued on the $200 deposit.

Where do I get information on financial aid and scholarships?

Ms. Karen Gilliam in the School of Dentistry handles financial aid for all dental and dental hygiene students and also has information on various scholarships. Please view the financial aid resource page for more information.

What do I do if I must miss class?

Contact the Office of Academic Affairs in the Dean's office at: 828-3784 to inform them of your absence from class. It is your responsibility to contact your professors regarding your absence and any missed work. Making up and rescheduling any missed examination is at the discretion of the course director and must be arranged with the individual course director. In some instances, if a student is to be absent more than one day, a doctor's statement may be required.

What do we do when the school is closed for bad weather?

Contact the dental school inclement weather hotline at (804) 278-ABCD. This number will provide the information you need to decide on whether to come to the dental school or not. In some instances the dental school and or clinics may be in operation when the University announces a different schedule. View the dental school's inclement weather policy here.

We will be having a baby soon. How will this impact my classes?

Please refer to the Maternity, Paternity, and Adoption Leave Policy.

How do I update/change my contact information?

Student addresses are collected during orientation. Please email Ms. Angela Easley in the Dean's Office with your updated contact information.  This will ensure that the School of Dentistry has the most current information. To update/change information in the University system, log into eServices and update your information there. This will disseminate information in the University systems. Some information, including a name change, will have to be done in person at the office of Records and Registration. Once your name has been changed with the university, you will need to submit a Name, Department or Information Change ticket in the School of Dentistry Work Order System (requires VPN for off-site access) to have your name changed in the schools' systems.
